Historic memory consists of the “set of memories”, of experiences lived through community. The feeling of the past is the baton which keeps the passage from one generation to the next alive. In Menù, we never forget our origins. In 1932 Romolo Barbieri founded a cured pork meat factory in Cavezzo bearing his name, and in 1950 he continued with RoBar, a company which made bouillon cubes and food specialities.

In 1956, Rodolfo Barbieri took over the company after his father’s sudden death, and gave special attention to the production of such food specialities as Pomodorina. Always supported by his family and, until 1994, also by his sister Giliana, chef and product supervisor, who died prematurely. Today Rodolfo Barbieri is Menù’s President, whereas his wife Maria Teresa and his children Romolo and Anna Rosa are actively engaged in the family business.

Menù has always been bound to its territory. Its offices are in Cavezzo, in the building which once housed the cured pork meat factory and then RoBar, while production is in nearby Medolla. No difficulty was enough to make one think of changing this location, not even the two heavy earthquakes which destroyed both structures in May 2012. The earth had rebelled. Every balance was shaken. Menù did not go away, it proved its affection for its land which hosts the families and offers its products for work and nutrition.

The value of knowledge is expanded when it is shared. Menù makes its know-how available to its restaurant and chef customers through its vast network of agents, constant attendance of fairs, showrooms and tasting events and the regular publication, over twenty years, of Menù magazine which, five times a year proposes exclusive recipes and articles giving up to date information on Menù’s products and how to use them. Also constant dialogue with the best in the catering business means Menù is definitely aware of market trends and the development of taste.

There exist rituals which one loves and which bring us together, unchanging gestures handed down through time. The traditions which have always been with us and which we are happy to find again, perhaps after a long absence, give us a feeling of security. Tradition, memory, local products, but also innovation, creativity, awareness of knowledge and tastes, these are some of Menù’s key words.

Work: a fundamental element of society, an essential constitutional value. Menù’s production is unstoppable. In 2012 there were a few months’ slowdown due to earthquake damages. Today, the company, which overcame the tough test of the earthquake thanks to its determination and tenacity, has improved and had implemented its manufacturing, organizing and logistics processes. The company grasped the opportunity to reorganize a large part of its production layout in line with current regulations. 30.000 square metres of surface devoted to manufacturing plants are made entirely using wooden earthquake proof structures, in line with cutting edge technology. The new automatic warehouse for finish ed products will host up to 30.000 pallet places, twice as much as before. The Menù production sector is like a big kitchen and the production of most of the products follows the seasonal offerings of the farms. The departments have in common the pursuit of quality, from raw material to the finished product, obtained through advanced technology that never forgets the human touch.

Children are the future. Nothing in the world is more beautiful than children, they are simple, trusting, innocent, pure. Their eyes take us both to the immensity of the sea and the splendour of the Sun. We must protect them, our work represents their future, the circle of life could offer them the chance one day of becoming the stars of Menù’s future.

"Ora et labora", literally, means "pray and work", an expression which sums up two moments which can be brought together in the same day. Work, in fact, is the original condition of the human being and through work, each worker shares in the divine work and wisdom. In 2010, next to the production area of Medolla Menù built a chapel dedicated to Saint Gabriel, an intimate and well lit place, shared with the company workers and others, where moments of private prayer are accompanied by religious celebrations.

On May 29, 2012, at 9.04 in the morning, a powerful earthquake put to the test, psychologically and physically, the inhabitants and workers of the Modena plains. Menù immediately set itself the goal of starting up again. August 2013 was a crucial moment for the company, when tomato processing started up again, with the production of Pomodorina Menù, and business started to roll again. In December 2013, a huge lighted sign with the name “Menù” replaced the poster of the Phoenix, an evocative symbol which had accompanied the last 18 months of a difficult period. Menù is back, stronger than ever.
